How PIs Get Name and Address From Unlisted Phone Numbers

This is a great question I get asked all the time. So many times in our life we'll have a cell phone number or an unlisted number for someone but they are avoiding us. Or perhaps you believe they gave you a fake name and address and the only identifying information is the phone number they gave you. This type of problem is usually associated with some kind of unpaid debt ,fraud or scam.

What usually happens is you enter into some kind of deal with a person and exchange numbers and names , maybe a business card. You never asked for identification or did a back ground check to look for judgments or liens, bankruptcies or criminal records.
Then after a time all your calls go to voice mail and messages go unreturned. You have an uneasy feeling about the deal and you realize you actually know very little about the person you once trusted. You never ran any kind of background report because they seemed honest, kind friendly. Maybe this is a person you were romantically involved with or had plans to go into business.

This article is not about lecturing you on performing due diligence background checks on potential partners. That ship has sailed. If you're owed money and all you have is an unlisted or non published phone number all is not lost. Not even if its a cell phone number.
Private investigators have many sources that will return a real name address and phone number for almost any unlisted , non published or cellular telephone number.

The first step would be a database search. There are information broker services that will buy the information people use when shopping or filling our applications and sell that information to private investigators. A common source of this information is the "pizza break". When you order a pizza from any of the national chains they ask for your phone number, address and even your name. They take your information enter into their database. That information gets sold to data brokers. So even if a number is unlisted it is available.

Another method is a pretext. Sometimes you can call the number and trick the person into revealing who they are and where they live. This is something best left to an experienced investigator who hs done it many times. If the person gets suspicious you are trying to locate them, they may skip town.
One more method is "insider" sources. Many investigators will develop relationships with people that have access to these kinds of records and will be able to call on relationships in case they have a extra difficult phone break.

Finally an investigator may have a trap line or a number with Call Capture and Automatic Number Identification. These are resources a PI can use to over ride systems like Caller ID block to recover the customer name and address from an unlisted number.

So if you're reading this because you are uneasy about a relationship and you are trying to contact or locate someone but all you have is an unlisted number all hope is not lost. You just need to contact a professional that specializes in that type of investigation.
